Maynard’s Street Art Obsession – Valparaíso, Chile

Last Updated on February 12, 2024 by Travelationship

Valparaíso is a mecca for those on the hunt for good street art destinations worldwide. Valparaíso lies on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, an easy 90 minutes Northwest of Santiago, Chile. If you are already headed to the seaside town of Viña del Mar, you are a quick 15 minutes away by car, taxi, bus, or train to this heaven for color.

Street Art in Valparaíso, Chile

I thoroughly enjoyed our walks around Valparaíso, as it seemed every alley and sidewalk had many treasures to display. This one was on top of the numerous pieces flanking the streets winding through the area. Similar to Sydney, the was respect for fellow artists and few instances of a work of another. Some of this might stem from the fact that paintable surfaces were abundant. There was a good use of space and several components that cleverly curtailed their location.

I was disappointed in the much written about Valparaíso Open Air Museum. Many pieces were starting to show their age, expedited by the ocean air. It just felt lacking compared to any random alley we walked down. I did, however, like the narrow Atahualpa road stretching from Plaza El Descanso.

The neighborhoods/Cerros of Bella Vista, Concepcion, and Alegre are where you want to spend most of your time. These cerros are brimming with piece after piece, and when you need a break, there are various beautiful cafes scattered around you. While works are scattered throughout most of the city, it is not necessarily the area you want to visit. Though we didn’t enter a bad neighborhood while wandering the city, there was no need to visit the others.

Keep an Eye Out in Valparaíso

It is essential to keep your eyes on the roads as you walk around. Many of the sidewalks are filled with landmines from the dog population, and some of the steps are crumbling on the many staircases around town.

I think this is a fantastic use of space.

  1. This place is indeed a revelation. It looks like a mecca for street art connoisseurs. I have rarely seen such vibrant and colourful examples of street art. They stand as a silent tribute in a riot of colours to their unknown creators.

  2. So vibrant! We love street art. The baby seal is so cute! Are these permanent? Or seasonal or festival based? Thanks for sharing.

  3. Wonderful street art. I love street arts, they bring life to otherwise plain walls. This frog one here looks so real. I will definitely visit these streets when I land in Chile
