The street art of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, aka the Blue City, was anything but just blue. Aptly nicknamed for the hues of blue found all over the city, Jodhpur was full of colors. Depending on who you ask, the reason for the sea of blues ranges from marking Brahim homes to sun reflection to keep temperatures cool to deterring termites. Whatever the reason, the saturation of blues and paint gives Jodhpur a unique feel and look.
Street Art in Jodhpur, India
Most murals we found were by accident, except those at the Blue Corridor / Blue City Lane. This location was designed to encourage visitors to take selfies and enjoy. The murals depict traditional scenes of local culture with a few more modern pieces sprinkled in.
We were in Jodhpur in April, and the temperatures were hot. We did our best to wander the city during the early mornings to try to be the heat. The best way to explore the Blue City was to stroll through the streets. Getting lost and finding random works of art and interesting corners and alleys was fantastic. Be mindful and respectful of some turns and entrances, as many buildings and doorways are private homes.
Also, be very careful of the stray dogs. For the most part, we did not have issues with the stray dogs, but we did witness a couple of dog fights, which was a little unnerving.
How to Get to and Around Jodhpur
The Jodhpur airport services the city with flights from all the major cities; there are trains in and out of town regularly, and, of course, by car, taxis, and motos to help you get around if needed.
We found walking to be our best mode of transportation within the city. However, we did use a couple of auto rickshaws to get to some places far away.
