We don’t bill ourselves as food experts; we both agree we suck at trying new foods. It doesn’t mean we don’t like to eat, nor does it mean we don’t know a good restaurant when we find it. Rwanda’s food scene continues to grow and improve. Here are a few of our favorite restaurants.
Restaurants in Kigali
Italian: Sol e Luna
Sol e Luna is the go-to Italian restaurant in Kigali. Owned by an authentic Italian, Sol e Luna has some of the best pizza we have ever had. It does tend to be expat-heavy, but since the pizza is so fantastic, we don’t mind. – KG 599 Street, Kigali, Rwanda.
Buffet Style: Afrika Bite
Rwandans like to eat, and you can find buffets just about anywhere in every city. Most buffets consist of the same staples of potatoes, sweet potatoes, brochette, rice, and beans. Extra items may include soups, ugali, cassava, pieces of bread, fruits, and vegetables. – 7 KG 674 St, Kigali
Indian: Khana Khazana
Indian food is at its African best. There were so many choices, and everything we tried was delicious. The Subzi Taka-Tin and the chicken tikka masala were exceptional, but everything was good. – (Two Locations) KN31 st, Kiyovu, Kigali, Rwanda & 9 KN 31 St, Kigali, Rwanda.
Breakfast: J. Lynn’s
For a Saturday morning of delicious coffee, real fresh donuts, and breakfast delights. Their fresh donuts are only available on Saturday mornings and are worth the wait. They also have incredible coffee, burritos with fresh salsa, and a small market selling freshly picked fruits and vegetables. – KK 25 Ave, Kigali, Rwanda.
Food Outside Kigali
Volcana Lounge
It is hands down the best place to eat after a morning of trekking with gorillas. Their pizza is thin-crust and tasty. They also serve salads, sandwiches, and Italian fare with beer and wine. Ask for the pili-pili sauce to spice it up; it is addictive. – Avenue 5 Juillet, Ruhengeri, Rwanda Tel: 0728300753
Bonus for the Adventurous Eaters:
Street Alley Omelets, Chips, and African Tea – You can find street omelets consisting of fresh eggs and pre-cooked chips in alleys off some of the main roads all over Rwanda. Usually, they open around dusk and carry on until the wee hours of the morning. Omelet chefs hide out in dark alleys, curating huge, cheap, mouth-watering omelets filled with chips and a side of hot African tea. Ordered by price from around 300 Rwf and up– estimated at a three egg and chip omelet costs around 600 Rwf/$0.85 USD.
We located our favorite omelet vendor in the Kimironko area near KG19. Ask a local to show you their favorite vendor. Locations, days available, and hours change depending on the police situation in each area – wink, wink -understand?
Yesy, and I also love sol e Luna! La Gallette is another one of my favourite restaurants in Kigali.
