Our Bungee Failure in Plettenberg Bay

Last Updated on February 12, 2024 by Travelationship

It was our last day in Tsitsikamma National Park, and Matt was psyched to do some bungee jumping. We planned to stop at Face Adrenalin and step off the tallest bungee jumping bridge in the world before heading to Gansbaai to prepare for our white shark cage dive.

Bungee Jump Time, or Not?

Instead, we walked into our travel fail #4 – not planning enough time. We had no idea jumping off the bridge would take so long. This turned out to be one of our fail-and-learn travel moments.

Bungee Jump Time!

We arrived at Face Adrenalin, and the staff was contagiously enthusiastic. I was even thinking of jumping. We listened to the sales pitch, agreed to the price, chatted with some other jumpers, and then learned the duration of the experience. We had just missed the previous group, so we would need to wait for that group to complete their jumps and return from the bridge. Also, we would have to wait through the current entire waiting group. It would be an estimated 3-4 hour wait,  and we didn’t have that much time to spare.

I had already opted out because my impatience for anticipation got the better of me. Maynard wanted to jump. I let him weigh the pros and cons and decide what to do. In the end, he chose not to jump. Instead, we had lunch on the restaurant deck and watched one of the groups jump one after the other.

Travel Lesson

I was disappointed in myself for not jumping,  but I felt terrible for Matt for not jumping. Our lesson learned was to check earlier on these types of excursions. We are above-average planners, but we had really dropped the ball in the planning department for this area. Not everything had to be planned,  but if you set your heart on something due to the leg work to make it happen.

Looking back, we aren’t as bummed about missing the jump because now it is just one more of the many reasons we need to go back to Tsitsikamma National Park.

Face Adrenaline: is the World’s Tallest Bungee Jump. The whole thing is staged on the Bloukrans Bridge, 709 feet (216 meters) above the river. Face Adrenaline is open 365 days a year, and more info can be found on their website.

Location: Bloukrans River Bridge, Tsitsikamma, Plettenberg Bay 6600, South Africa

Who Should Do It: Anyone. Their website mentions Mohr Keet, a 96-year-old who completed the jump.

What to wear and bring with you: Think comfortable clothes. It is recommended that if you choose to wear shorts, they should be roughly knee length. Don’t forget your GoPro ®; this is what they were built for.

Cost: ZAR 790 for a bungee jump. ZAR 100 for a bridge walking tour.

Recommendable: Not Sure. It sure did look fun, and Face Adrenaline has an incredible reputation for fun and safety. The completed jumpers we spoke with raved about their experience. If you are interested in bungee jumping off the tallest bungee bridge in the world – Plan ahead!
