Discovering Ohrid: 48 Hours in North Macedonia’s Gem

Nestled on the shores of one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, Ohrid is a city that effortlessly marries natural beauty with rich history. This UNESCO World Heritage site is often called the “Jerusalem of the Balkans” due to its significant number of churches. Here’s how to make the most of two days in this Balkan paradise.

Day 1: Dive into History and Nature

Morning: Ohrid’s Old Town

Start your day with a leisurely stroll through Ohrid’s Old Town. The cobblestone streets, dotted with Byzantine-era churches and traditional Ottoman houses, tell tales of the city’s ancient past. Take advantage of the iconic St. John at Kaneo, perched on a cliff overlooking the lake. Its picturesque setting is perfect for a morning photo.

While exploring the town, don’t miss the Church of Holy Mary Peryvleptos. It was our favorite in the area, with amazing elaborately painted murals. The Icon Gallery is right next door and shouldn’t be missed either. Home to a remarkable collection of icons, some dating back to the 12th century, this gallery showcases the rich religious art history of the region.

Lunch: Eco-friendly Eateries

For lunch, head to one of Ohrid’s eco-friendly restaurants. Many establishments in the city are increasingly sourcing local and organic ingredients, ensuring a minimal carbon footprint. Enjoy traditional dishes like tavče gravče (baked beans) or pastrmajlija (a type of pie).

Two options for this might be Terrazza Aquarius or Pizza Via Sacra. Terrazza Aquarius is a popular waterfront cafe in a relaxed environment with plenty of views. While Pizza Via Sacra serves dishes catered to a little more international liking, it does so with fresh local ingredients. You can also find a list of local favorites. Reservations are recommended for this casual dining facility during busy periods.

Afternoon: Lake Ohrid Boat Tour

Opt for a rowboat or sailboat tour of Lake Ohrid. Not only is this a more eco-friendly choice compared to motorboats, but it also offers a serene way to experience the lake’s pristine waters.

If the weather permits and you want an even closer look at the lake, opt for a dip from one of the many beaches along the shore. Heck, getting to the beaches is half the fun. Lovely, windy paths lead to Beach Potpesh and Kaneo, two of our favorites. Note these are not sandy beaches but rocky flats with deck chairs.

Evening: Sunset at Samuel’s Fortress

End your day at Samuel’s Fortress, which offers panoramic views of the city and the lake, especially during sunset. The fortress, dating back to the 10th century, is a testament to Ohrid’s strategic importance through the ages.

Day 2: Embrace the Outdoors

Morning: Bike around the Lake

Rent a bicycle and explore the lakeside at your own pace. The well-maintained paths offer breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Bicycles are a great way to reduce your carbon footprint while staying active.

Lunch: Picnic by the Lake

Pack a picnic with fresh produce from Ohrid’s local markets. Enjoy a meal by the lake, surrounded by nature. Remember to pack out what you pack in, keeping the area pristine for others.

Afternoon: Visit the Galicica National Park

Located between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, Galicica National Park is a haven for biodiversity. The park is home to over 1,500 species of plants and numerous animals. Opt for guided tours that promote responsible wildlife viewing, ensuring minimal animal disturbance.

Evening: Traditional Music and Dance

Round off your trip with a cultural evening. Many local establishments host traditional Macedonian music and dance nights. It’s a beautiful way to immerse yourself in the local culture while supporting community-based tourism.

One recommendation is Restaurant “Sv. Sofija”, which offers Macedonian and international dishes. It has open-air seating that provides views of the Church of Saint Sophia. Most evenings, they feature live music. Another recommendation is Belvedere, which specializes in Macedonian food in a relaxed atmosphere with live music and exciting museum-like decor.
