Yellow Water Billabong

Yellow Water Billabong is a small body of water off the South Alligator River in Kakadu National Park. Kakadu is a UNESCO World Heritage site just outside of Darwin, in the North of Australia. If you are into birdwatching or crocodiles, or both, Yellow Water Billabong should be high on your list of places to visit. The best and easiest way to accomplish this is by booking a tour with Yellow Water Cruises. We choose the sunrise tour, and it was loaded with wildlife.

Comb-crested Jacana. These guys were fun to watch, as they danced from lilypad to lilypad.

Nankeen Night-Heron. These guys sit like statues until something is crazy enough to move below them.

Azure Kingfisher. Saw a few of these beautiful little guys. — Azure Kingfisher. Saw a few of these pretty little guys.

Australian Darter. These guys were all over and they liked to show off.

Even their tail looks like something you would never want to mess with.

Getting There: Kakadu National Park

A biodiverse park loaded with wildlife and Aboriginal history lies a quick two-hour drive to the east of Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory. Whether it be by rental car or tour, chances are you will be exploring Kakadu in a vehicle of some sort. If you choose to rent, think 4×4 as the park has lots of road restrictions. If you only plan on visiting sites directly off either of the main roads (Hwy 36 or 21), you can get away with only having a two-wheel drive.

Yellow Water Cruise

There are typically six cruises per day, but that number can change depending on the time of year. The first one at 6:45 am, and the last one at 4:30 pm are the most popular. Booking through their website is a breeze, and I highly recommend you do it before arriving to secure the cruise you want. Prices start at $72 AUD, but as with all things, they are subject to change, so double-check the website before going.
